In the car Matthew was dicking about with his phone, grunting the odd couple of words whenever his dad asked a question or tried to learn something of significance about his son.

“School any good?”

“Yah.”

“Finding it easy enough?”

“Yah!”

“No bullying?”

“No bullying.”

“Dad I’m fine, trying to get into the zone for training tonight.” Is what he wished his son had said, instead it was clicks zooshes and vooooms that he could hear from the phone. Before long he heard nothing and the windscreen in front of him like a movie theatre for one, played the past… it flickered in black and white, 16 mm, he’d always hated popcorn but he could smell it either way… He also found he could jump, skip and pause whenever he felt the need.

To the outside eye it was impossible to tell that Dennis was fixated and in some sort of trance. He never knew he was doing it. Drifting through parts of his life while reliving others. If he was asked a question a short sharp answer would suffice…could be where the kids get it from or a sign of the times, as ever it is unknown.
