Dennis’s phone buzzed. It was his daughter reminding him about ballet tonight. She needed to be there early to stretch, get into costume sand whatever else it was she did. There were three x’s.

It took Dennis a while do uncover their meaning. He had four x’s in the previous text, none the one before yet five the one before that.

And then it hit him.

The X’s went up with whatever she believed she needed and therefore wanted. Which in todays terms could be deemed as love. A kind of loving at least.

He was called into testify against Jim and refused. They respected his refusal but then went, “Come onnnnn let’s get this thing over and done with, you don’t have to put up too much of a fight, it will all be anonymous, he’ll never know…”

They all had the same suit on. Cheap but reliable from Next. They changed attire with the seasons. If it was new, they got it and compared cuts which were always the similar if not identical. Their faces were a myriad of lackadaisical ideas, a lack of moral fibre and no real caring for the common anything.

Dennis wanted to say, “He’s got a wife and kids leave him alone.”
