The next day Dennis would testify and Jim would lose his job. Below is why.

Lying down in the car, Dennis trying to catch several z’s, exhausted and blowing smoke dust from his cavernous lungs. But it was uncomfortable and his neck hurt, his right leg twitched, he also realised he’d had a near permanent head ache since last tuesday, he just forgot about it sometimes.

Still, he drowsed off for five minutes or so hoping two hours had quietly dissipated in his long line of a life…Believing he’d wake up at home and all would be well. His family around him, in his mind they were always younger and were his left and right arm attachments again. His wife standing behind him goading him, encouraging with surreptitious whispers and a massaging of his neck and ego.

In the daytime at the park as the children ran amok, he’d compare stats with his few remaining friends of the time like they were top trumps, “My sons in the ninety-second percentile for height.”

“Oh yeah, well mines got a head the size of ballon which indicates extreme intelligence.”

“Or retardation.” He wanted to say, but settled for, “Oh right” then followed by another fact about his kid. It was what everybody did. He did too. Nobody had ever told him to question the…
