Now Dennis’s life hadn’t always been this pathetic. On paper he was not always this one tone and one note, inwardly whinging most of the time, almost scared of the weight of the world as he played his own viola concerto to himself…
He was not always one note?
“Round three.” She said before slipping into bed with him, half-munching on her own toast and bacon. “Ran out of eggs,” she said, “that’s why you got more bacon.” It was hard to understand with her mouth full but it didn’t matter.
Slight-hangovers always made him nostalgic or a little freer with his words than he usually would be…he often raced through lubricated thoughts but recently they held more space in his mind. They were not so easy to forget or shake off. He tried confiding in his wife but she only compared his life with, “So and so” and “well so and so didn’t react that way.”
But he was not them and they were not him. Or so he thought. And it’s hard to beg to differ with feelings.
So why did he emote as he did?

“Your mother’s been stealing again,” she said.
It was nice to be in his wife’s presence again. To think of things rather than be acting the way he always did when alone. Her warmth was in a smile, her hair…
