Dennis’s mother rang. She always had the habit of ringing him at the most inopportune moments. Still, his voice fluttered and rose an octave or two to cover the drunkenness in his person.
“So son, how are you? Not getting into any mischief are we now?”
The night’s electric blue had been swallowed whole by a gust of wind that sent shingles up the spine.
“Yes Mam, you all good?”
“You know I’m all good, I’m always bloody good, my life now is always sodding good, I do the same thing day in day out…my life is there to subsist…I subsist son that’s what I do. Do you hear I subsist…subsist…”
She rarely spoke like this…
Dennis, part oblivious, in a dozed state of preoccupation with Gary who was making funny hand gestures and whispering words such as Bollocks, cunt, tit and wanker in the breeze, “The television keeping you company then?” he asked.
“Oh that shit’s always on, morons laughing at people laughing at the television I don’t know what the worlds coming to, it never used to be this way, did it?”
“You remember Roustabout ma?”
Gary had tired now, he lay down on the bench and made sounds of the z’s.
